Ipoh : Street, Sleek & Funky

The Perak Society of Performing Arts will present a musical, “Ipoh : Street, Sleek & Funky” in collaboration with Jabatan Kebudayaan Kesenian Negara Perak (JKKN). The musical will tell the story of friendships formed in this small town once well known as the “CITY TIN BUILT”. It hopes to bring to life the colorful murals which are beautifully painted on the walls of our shop houses and back streets. The story tells of a time when families lived above their quaint colonial shops houses where they ran their businesses. Some still do today!

Ipoh has always been well known for cultivating lifelong friendships. It is a place where many Ipohites still come home to revisit year after year bringing with them warm memories even though they have grown old and grey and settled with their family far away.

This Musical is a collaboration of performing arts educators, artists and talents to create a production which speaks through song, drama & dance. Through our performers and young persons, we hope to bring to you life on the streets of Old Town Ipoh, to an era which was simple and ‘funky’. We hope to share with the audience, the trials and tribulation of a simple boy and his love for his friend.

This boy despite the teasing of his friends helped his best friend, the daughter of a rich tin miner to go for her cherished dream! It will be an exciting kaleidoscope of song and music in motion, displayed through story-telling.

Our objectives for this original performance is to showcase our very mixed but lovable cultural heritage where various culture blend in our unique Malaysian style. This story relates how Malaysians comfortably intermingle languages with an ease only Malaysians understand. The musical also provides a platform for performers to showcase their talents especially western dance forms which are still practiced in Ipoh today.

Our musical will feature the work of muralist Eric Lai and music by Ipoh born Lynn YewEvers including her award winning “Without Words”.
