What is a Musical?

Musical theatre is a form of theatrical performance that combines songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The story and emotional content of a musical – humor, pathos, love, anger – are communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the work as an integrated whole. Although musical theatre overlaps with other theatrical forms like opera and dance, it may be distinguished by the equal importance given to the music as compared with the dialogue, movement and other elements. Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have generally been called, simply, musicals.

Like opera, the singing in musical theatre is generally accompanied by an instrumental ensemble called a pit orchestra, located in a lowered area in front of the stage. While opera typically uses a conventional symphony orchestra, musicals are generally orchestrated for ensembles ranging from 27 players down to only a few players. Rock musicals usually employ a small group of mostly rock instruments, and some musicals may call for only a piano or two instruments. The music in musicals uses a range of styles and influences including operetta, classical techniques, folk music, jazz and local or historical styles that are appropriate to the setting. Musicals may begin with an overture played by the orchestra that weaves together excerpts of the score's famous melodies.

Importance of Theatre In The Modern World

There are many arguments in our world that are biased about Theatre Arts in our culture. There are many people who believe that theatre is important not only for our entertainment, but also to build culture in a quickly growing uncultured generation. Conversely, there are those who believe that theatre is not important because there are more immediate forms of entertainment. Looking past the opinions of each group, there are facts derived from studies and observation that thespians and other theatre supporters may base their ideas. In an experiment in 2011, results showed that the learning and problem solving skills, among other psychological capabilities, were greatly improved the longer the individuals being observed had been involved in theatre. The opinions of those opposed to theatre being important usually can be rooted back to a hatred, an apathy, a belief in the stereotypes, or a lack of knowledge of theatre.

Theatre has a culture of its own that many people do not understand. To those that do understand it, they often make it a very large part of their lives. Plays are sometimes attempts to spread awareness about problems like racism, sexism, homophobia, and other types of persecution. The playwrights write about something that matters to them as their form of expression. These plays help our society function better because they bring awareness on what is happening and prompt individuals into taking action. It builds a passion in many groups of people because they realize what is really important to them and that they have the power to make a change. Theatre is a powerful medium for exposing problems because those who understand it know how real and active theatre is in the world.

The main reason people do theatre is to discover themselves. This means they want to come to a self-understanding and fulfillment. Human nature leads us to be original. Theatre is the perfect outlet for people to be original and to express themselves. This also helps to bridge the gap of our misunderstanding of why we exist. For many people, theatre also gives a purpose to life. Human beings naturally want to express themselves, and theatre is the most expressive art form.

Being part of theatre, with the message of what makes theater-going superior and unique, is that audiences would experience the electricity and passion of flesh-and-blood performers and musicians; an experience that people emphasized could not be had by watching movies or television or listening to recordings on CD’s, iPods, computers or other digital devices. As the greatest Broadway Musical composer Stephen Sondheim says: “Every audience is privileged to see a very specific performance that nobody will ever see again. It is the ‘aliveness’ of the orchestra that makes the evening unique and allows for the interplay between the audience, the stage and the pit, which is necessary in every musical. There has to be a three-way interplay - each of them has to affect the other… If it’s not all live, it doesn’t have life.”

Further describing the irreplaceable value of live orchestras, Broadway composer Scott Frankel said, “Going to see a Broadway musical is one of the few remaining hand-cobbled experiences left in our digitized entertainment world. It is something of a tightrope act: the actors are delivering their lines and songs in real time, not prerecorded; the live musicians perform the score with nuance and sensitivity, reacting not only to subtle interpretative variances emanating from the stage, but also from particular audience responses. Having played in the pits of Broadway musicals, conducted Broadway pit orchestra and composed the score for a Broadway musical…I can attest to the fact that when everything is ‘LIVE’ it keeps the experience fresh and alive for performers, musicians and audiences alike.”
