Sharpened Word - October 2019

DOES FOOD MAKE A NATION

SW strives to promote nation-building via our art and literature related activities and events. So, from films and spoken words in the last two months, we are now moving on to culinary but still with the same theme in mind – Does Food Makes A Nation?

Coming 19th October at 22 Hale Street, SW will be graced by a record-breaking five panelists to talk about the most-loved subject by all Malaysians.

It’s Makan and Minum time!

We have with us Professor Khoo Gaik Cheng from the University of Nottingham and the co-author to a culinary literary called Eating Together: Food, Space and Identity in Malaysia and Singapore.

Joining her will be KL-based Ahmad Najib “Nadge” Arifin, director and research from NADGE Academy. Although he is a qualified architect, Ahmad Najib has made food his main passion and his involvement in food has brought him to all four corners of the world.

Then we have Suresh Subramaniam, the Managing Director of Crew Skills International in Ipoh, a shinning rags-to-riches success from the hospitality industry. His is currently an educator in professional chef training since settling down in Ipoh.

We also have the pleasure of inviting the founders of Jalan Theatre Café, the innovative young entrepreneurs Kenneth Ng and Jecvis Wang, an upcoming café known for serving its specialty coffee with a rather unique business plan.

And how dare we talk about food without See Foon Chan-Koppen, AMP, who has written two widely popular food guides for Ipoh. A retired hotelier, See Foon has chosen Ipoh to be her home and her fortnightly food column in the community paper – Ipoh Echo – muster a huge cult following.

We will give more details about the speakers in the coming weeks.

To make the event merrier, October is also the 4th Anniversary of SW so we would also like to invite all to come and celebrate our anniversary. Pak Peter is lining up some nice surprises for the guests and audience after the session.

Also, there will be a collection of vintage cooking books for sale during the day.

Indeed, a mouthful ……

Hope to see you guys @ 22 Hale Street!
