Voices from Vienna to Broadway By PSPA SINGERS 2013
The PSPA Singers are back with an impactful performance of song, dance and drama! Joined by 4 soloists, Sirikhwan Buathong, Thanis Sonkloe, Salith Dechsangworn (from Thailand) and Marianne Poh. The PSPA Singers, led by Ipoh-born mezzo-soprano, Marianne, proved their mettle by tackling repertoires from technically-challenging operatic arias to lyrical musical pieces.
The soloists opened the show by singing a solo each. Marianne sang “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” from the opera Carmen by Bizet, Thanis took on “Deh, vieni alla finestra” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni while Salith sang “Zueignung” by Richard Strauss, and Sirikhwan rendered “La Danza” from Rossini.
Voices from Vienna to Broadway encompassed songs from two of Mozart’s famous comedic operas (opera buffa) – Don Giovanni and Cosi Fan Tutte – in the first half. The second half saw excerpts from three musicals – The Sound of Music, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables, with popular songs such as Edelweiss, My Favourite Things and One Day More which was then performed by the PSPA Singers and the Thai's.
The guest singers surprised the audience with a rendition of Belaian Jiwa for the encore, sung entirely in impeccable Bahasa Melayu and were joined by the PSPA Singers in Siyahamba, an African spiritual song.
